IIHS & NHTSA Ford Escape Safety Ratings

The two safety ratings we’ll be looking at for the 2020 Escape come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

To start, the NHTSA gives the Ford Escape a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating, which is their highest mark available. When you break down safety in each individual section of the vehicle, you continue to see five stars:

Front Passenger Side	Five Stars
Front Driver Side	Five Stars
Combined Side Barrier and Pole Ratings: Front Seat	Five Stars
Combined Side Barrier and Pole Ratings: Rear Seat	Five Stars

As you can see, the front driver side safety has a 5-star rating. The side crash protection rating for the front and rear seats are also five stars.

As we look at IIHS, we see a similarly positive trend in the safety grades. IIHS rates on a different scale, with Good being the highest possible score and Poor being the lowest. The 2020 Ford Escape gets a range of good ratings, specifically when it comes to the head restraints and seats, the safety features on the sides of the vehicle, and the roof strength.

Additional Ford Escape Safety Features

Adaptive Cruise Control is an available feature. This system can adjust your speed for you in order to effectively maintain the same safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. For instance, when the car ahead starts to slow down, the Escape will do the same as well as return to the predetermined speed when traffic resumes.

Standard Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking monitors the front of your vehicle and will let you know if it determines that a collision seems likely. If you fail to react in enough time, this feature will cause the brakes to automatically increase sensitivity, giving you refined responsiveness when you do hit the brakes.

The 2020 Ford Escape also comes standard with the BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) that uses radars to alert you whenever a vehicle is occupying one of your blind spots. With this kind of support, you’ll be able to change lanes with an increase in confidence every time.

The companion Cross-Traffic Alert feature kicks in when you’re backing out of a tight parking spot and a vehicle is approaching you from behind. In this scenario, you’ll get an alert to stop so you can avoid a collision.

There’s even more parking support available in the 2020 Escape in the form of the Active Park Assist 2.0. This handy tool performs several actions to help you out when you’re pulling into a parking space, which includes scanning the area for an open spot and then steering into the space for you.

Finally, the Ford Escape is equipped with the Lane-Keeping System that consists of two different aspects. First, there’s the Lane-Keeping Alert mode that sends vibrations through the steering wheel to let you know that you’re getting too close to a lane marker.

The other part of this system is the Lane-Keeping Aid mode that employs steering torque when it senses that you have inadvertently drifted out of your lane. This action is designed to direct you back to your original location in the lane.
