Engine & Transmission Competition

Ford F-250 Engine Ford provides its customers with three engine options, while GMC only offers two. The base trims of the Ford Super Duty and Sierra 2500 HD run on comparable V8 engines.

However, while both models are standardly equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, only the 2020 F-250 has SelectShift™ technology. This allows you to switch into semi-manual shifting to better control your driving experience.

An available engine from Ford is a 7.3-liter V8, which generates up to 430 horsepower (HP) and 475 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, the Sierra 2500 HD’s 6.6-liter V8 produces up to 401 HP and 464 lb-ft of torque.

If you regularly need extra torque for heavier hauling, you should take a look at Ford and GMC’s diesel engines.

Under the hood of the 2020 F-250, you’ll find a 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel that’s capable of making up to 475 HP and 1050 lb-ft of torque. This puts the Sierra 2500 HD at a disadvantage with a maximum output of 445 HP and 910 lb-ft of torque from its 6.6-liter Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine.

F-250 vs Sierra 2500: Safety

Ford F-250 Safety When you’re out on the road, it’s important to make sure that all your blind spots are covered. The Ford F-250 and GMC Sierra 2500 are fitted with LED headlamps, an electronic stability control system, and a rearview camera with hitch guidance. While each truck has a substantial safety suite, the 2020 F-250 has an edge.

An available, class-exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ makes towing easy for just about anyone. All you have to do is enter some measurements into the infotainment display located in the center stack and activate the system. After that, the rearview camera will track the trailer’s position as you back up.

With minimal input from a conveniently located knob on the driver’s side, this mostly hands-off feature automatically controls speed and steering to keep your F-250 steady and on the right track.

Can the Ford F-250 or GMC Sierra 2500 Tow More?

Ford F-250 Towing As for heavy-hitting haulers, the 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty and GMC Sierra 2500 HD have you covered.

They boast impressive weight ratings, providing drivers with at least 3,979 pounds of available payload if they choose the Sierra 2500 HD. However, the F-250 offers a 4,260-pound maximum payload as well as all-around higher towing capacities.

When properly equipped for conventional towing, the gas-powered F-250 can trailer up to 20,000 pounds and the Sierra 2500 HD can haul up to 14,500 pounds. The F-250’s maximum gooseneck towing capacity weighs in at 22,800 pounds while the Sierra 2500 HD’s only comes to 18,510 pounds.

You can also swap Ford’s 6-speed transmission for a 10-speed SelectShift Automatic® on the standard 6.2-liter V8. That way, you don’t have to choose an entirely different engine to gain additional towing power.

To acquire a similar transmission in the GMC Sierra 2500 HD, you would need to opt for the available 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine.
