2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year®: Ford F-150

Pickup truck fans near Plainfield, Indianapolis, and Avon will be excited to know that the 2018 Ford F-150 has recently been named Motor Trend Truck of the Year®! This is an exciting achievement for Ford, whose recently redesigned F-150 shed some weight a few years back and has been continuously improving ever since.

Which F-150s Were Tested? 

Motor Trend editors put four trucks from the 2018 Ford F-150 lineup to the test. Judges took a closer look at the following trims:

• F-150 XL, with a 3.3L V6 engine
• F-150 Lariat, with a 2.7L EcoBoost®
• F-150 Platinum, with a 5.0L V8
• F-150 Raptor, with a 3.5L EcoBoost®

The F-150 competed against some of the top trucks in the segment, from brands like Chevrolet and GMC. Judges were looking for the pickup with the best safety, performance, design, and engineering, and the F-150 succeeded in all areas.

Ford F-150 Performance

Judges cited many aspects of the 2018 F-150’s performance as being among their favorite qualities of the Ford pickup, including its towing capacity, powertrain performance, and fuel economy. The F-150 can tow up to 13,200 pounds when properly equipped, giving it best-in-class capabilities and making towing your trailer, speedboat, or work materials child’s play.

F-150 engines run the gamut from the base 290-horsepower V6 to the Raptor trim’s EcoBoost® V6 that has up to 450 horsepower on tap. For its segment, the F-150 is also highly efficient, with an EPA-estimated standard fuel economy of 18 city and 24 highway MPG. The F-150’s strong showing in all aspects of vehicle performance were key to it earning the Truck of the Year® award.

Design & Tech Improvements 

The Motor Trend judges were also impressed by the Ford F-150’s innovative cab design and technological prowess. Not only has the F-150 been decked out in new grilles, bumpers, head- and taillights, wheels, and more, but it’s also been subject to changes that improve its utility.

Judges praised the F-150 SuperCab for its rear-hinged doors that open nearly 180 degrees to make it easier for passengers to access the back seats, as well as a flat load floor for maximum utility. Plus, the Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ feature and 360-degree camera also earned accolades for improving steering and visibility for drivers needing to back up a trailer.
