A Breakdown of Bed Configurations

Bed Configurations

Before diving into the specifics of this truck and which trim levels offer which bed options, let’s talk about what bed configurations are available. To allow drivers to customize the truck of their dreams, Ford allows them to choose from these beds on the 2021 F-150:

  • Short bed: The smallest of the three, the 5.5-foot short bed measures 67.1 inches long by 50.6 inches wide and gives drivers 52.8 cubic feet of cargo space.
  • Regular bed: For a bit more room, the 6.5-foot regular bed provides drivers with a space that’s 78.9 inches long by 50.6 inches wide with 62.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
  • Long bed: For maximum cargo space, the 8-foot long bed measures 97.6 inches long by 50.6 inches wide and is capable of holding 77.4 cubic feet of cargo.

The decision of which cargo bed is right for you lies in your specific needs. If you primarily use your truck on the weekends for off-roading or camping adventures, the short bed may be a great option.

If instead, you need a pickup to carry your construction site materials, like lumber and sheet metal, then the long bed may be the perfect match for you.

Picking Which of the Cab Configurations You Want

Beyond choosing the box you want, you can also choose among three different cab configurations. The Regular Cab has seating for three, while the SuperCab and SuperCrew can seat up to six people among their two rows.

Each cabin offers 40.8 inches of headroom and 43.9 inches of legroom for those up front, so you’re sure to have ample space to stretch out in. However, the real difference between these cabins is in the back row.

As mentioned before, only the SuperCab and SuperCrew offer rear seating with the following dimensions:

SuperCab SuperCrew
Rear Headroom: 40.3 inches Rear Headroom: 40.4 inches
Rear Legroom: 33.5 inches Rear Legroom: 43.6 inches

As you can see, the SuperCrew ups the amount of legroom your passengers will have to enjoy, which is ideal for when your taller work buddies are along for the ride.

Which Box Comes with Each Cabin?

Which Box Comes with Each Cabin

You can choose the truck you want based on the bed and cabin combinations the 2021 Ford F-150 offers.

The Regular Cab is ideal if you don’t need a lot of passenger room, prefer a longer bed, and want a truck that can easily fit in tight areas. The Regular Cab can still fit in tighter areas because this cabin can be equipped with either the regular or long bed and maintain an overall length of up to 227.7 inches.

If you need the second row for more seating but also want one of the longer beds, you can get the SuperCab. This cabin configuration can be attached with the regular or long bed for a maximum length of 250.3 inches, the largest option for this truck.

The short or regular bed might have enough storage space for your everyday needs. If that is the case, you can still upgrade the amount of passenger space with the SuperCrew since it can be configured with one of these two bed options.

Choose Your Trim Based on Bed Configurations

The length of bed you’re interested in will play a large role on the 2021 Ford F-150 trim level you get behind the wheel of. Some options aren’t available on certain trims, so look at the different configurations you can choose from in this truck:

Payload Capacity of the 2021 F-150

Payload Capacity

Now that you know how much space each Ford F-150 box provides you with, it is also important to look at how much weight the truck can safely carry. With seven different engines to choose from, this truck has a varying payload capacity depending on the powertrain and bed configurations you choose.

If you’re looking to haul some heavy machinery and work equipment, then you’ll want to choose the 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine. This available motor not only provides your treks with 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, but it allows for some serious maximum payloads when properly equipped:

  • Short bed: 2,335 pounds
  • Regular bed: 2,900 pounds
  • Long bed: 3,325 pounds

As you can see, no matter which bed option you’re interested in, this truck can carry all your heavy materials to your construction site with ease.

Truck Bed Features and Accessories

Bed Features and Accessories

The extensive use of military-grade aluminum in the construction of the F-150 cabin and cargo box balances strength with less weight, but that is only part of the story. Other high-tech features include:

  • Power tailgate with tailgate step and tailgate work surface: The available power tailgate makes accessing the rear cargo area easier for those carrying heavy loads. This feature also makes it easier to lift the tailgate back up and step inside your bed. When needed, lower the tailgate to use it as a flat surface for checking blueprints or sawing wood.
  • BoxLink™: The optional BoxLink™ universal pickup box interface system secures an array of available Ford and aftermarket accessories, like ramps and dividers.
  • Stowable loading ramps: Available loading ramps make it easy to ride your lawn mower or ATV into the back of your truck.
  • Cargo box camera: Keep an eye on your cargo when jetting from worksite to worksite with this available camera view.

With these features by your side, your jobs are sure to be a breeze to tackle.

Hauling Cargo in More Than Just the Bed

Beyond carrying supplies and tools in the bed of the 2021 F-150, you can tow a great deal of weight behind it. Like the payload capacity, your towing capacity will fluctuate depending on the engine, cabin, and box you choose for your new Ford F-150 so you can customize based on your needs.

To maximize the cargo capabilities of the Ford F-150, the following engines are available:

Even at its minimum, the Ford F-150 can still tow an impressive 5,000 pounds. This will let you pull along your trailer loaded with supplies or your camper for a fun weekend out of town. However, if you need enough muscle to carry a 2-horse trailer or a large camper for a family vacation you’ll talk about for years to come, you’ll want to equip the 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 powertrain.

Ultimately, the variety of bed, cabin, and engine options that the 2021 F-150 offers lets you customize your truck to accommodate whatever you plan on towing.
