The History of The Benton House

In 1873, Nicholas Ohmer, built The Benton House as one of the five model styles for homes in the town of Irvington. This dwelling is a wonder example of the Second Empire style of architecture with fine woodwork and oak floors mirroring the iconic French Mansard design. Etched glass in the front doors and stairwell window set the tone for this home from the moment you enter, while restored finishes complete the classic look.

For twenty years, this abode was home to Allen R. Benton, a two-time president at Butler University. Following his death, the home sat alone, leading the Irvington Historic Landmarks Foundation to form in 1966 to oversee the purchase and restoration of the home. In 1969, the Benton House Association was formed, and they readied the home for use for the public.

Today, this home is listed as an Indiana Museum and is the only house on the East Side listed in the Historic Register that’s open to the public. You can spend a day touring its 10 rooms or soaking up its exterior beauty.

Take a Stroll in the Garden

Located on a beautifully wooded lot, The Benton House is just as striking on the outside as it is inside. The gardens surrounding the dwelling are unique for their display of pre-1900 heirloom plants like a historic peony collection.

The most stunning feature of their gardens, though, are the thousands of daffodils.  Some of these unique floras were hybridized between 1777 and 1897 and are truly memorable. Their annual Daffodil Week is held every April to celebrate the blooming of these flowers.
