What Are Tire Speed Ratings?

TiresEvery tire is designed for a different application and one of those applications is improved handling at high speeds. Every tire is designed to handle well at a certain speed and that limit is recorded in the tire’s speed rating.

Your speed rating is marketed as a letter located on the sidewall of your tire. Among the numbers detailing the size of the tire, you’ll typically find a letter at the end, which tells you how fast the tire is capable of going.

These tires can go anywhere from L to Y; the farther down the alphabet you go, the higher speeds the tire can handle. Lower speed tires, such as L and M tires, can often be found on off-road vehicles. Typically, drivers will likely see S-rated tires on their family sedans–and these tires can handle well at up to 112 MPH.

Differences Between Low- and High-Speed Tires

There a number of differences to consider between low- and high-speed tires and it can really come down to your preferences as a driver. Drivers who use higher speed tires won’t just notice improved handling while moving at higher speeds; they’ll notice improved handle even at low speeds as well. These tires lead to a much sportier drive feel, no matter where you’re driving.

There are benefits to choosing lower rated tires; however, that may be ideal for drivers who drive in rougher conditions. Tires designed for high speeds use softer materials, meaning they wear down easier, especially under extensive driving. Low-speed tires, on the other hand, are more rigid, meaning they’ll wear down more slowly and offer better traction on gravel.

What Happens if You Exceed Your Speed Rating?

TireWhile it’s not recommended to reach your tire’s speed rating in the first place, it’s especially important to know what to watch out for if you’re using lower rated tires.

Speed ratings are designed to tell you how fast a tire is designed to go while still handling well. If you exceed your tire’s speed rating, you’ll notice reduced handling and higher wear on your tires. This can pose a safety risk if your tires aren’t able to get enough traction to stop you at higher speeds.
